:: Bob Lappin & The Palm Beach Pops featuring Judy Collins
Where: Kravis Center - Dreyfoos Hall
Thursday, November 6, 2008
Time: 8:00 PM
Judy Collins
The first concert of The Palm Beach Pops' season features Grammy award winner and legendary folk icon Judy Collins with her best loved songs.
Her ethereal soprano voice has entertained audiences for over 50 years and is best known for her recordings "Send In The Clowns," a Stephen Sondheim Broadway ballad, "Amazing Grace" and "Both Sides Now". Ms. Collins achieved notoriety in the late 1960's and 1970's with her eclectic music favored by multiple generations. Her recent two-week engagement at the Carlyle Hotel in New York played to sold-out audiences with Ms. Collins' singing and songwriting lavishly praised by Stephen Holden of the New York Times.
With the revival of the American songbook by contemporary musicians over the past few years, this special symphonic performance showcases the timeless music that is gaining popularity with younger generations. http://www.palmbeachpops.org/html/08_season/judy_collins.html

Taste of the Palm Beaches- To Benefit The Big Heart Brigade
TASTE OF THE PALM BEACHESTM
Region's Leading Culinary Event To Benefit The Big Heart Brigade

Delray Beach, Florida July 29th, 2008 -- The anticipation begins for this fall season with the five month countdown to the fifth year anniversary of the Taste of the Palm Beaches, to be held Wednesday, November 12th from 5:30pm to 9pm. Mark your calendars now, for this event is one of the most exciting culinary experiences in Palm Beach County. Hosted by PGA Commons, this immaculate mile long, beautifully lit streetscape provides for a flawless social atmosphere. Along with fifty of The Palm Beaches most accomplished master chefs preparing their finest cuisines and wine tastings from top local wineries, there will also be silent auctions, fundraisers, fire truck and police displays, live entertainment, antique cars, and activities to guarantee an exiting evening for all.

100% of all the proceeds raised will go directly into bettering the community through the Big Heart Brigade charity organization. Established in 1992, staffed purely with volunteers, this group's goal is to support those in need within the community. Their most noteworthy program is preparing and giving Thanksgiving meals to those in need. The Big Heart Brigade's target is an epic one for this year; preparing at least 40,000 meals. Events such as this, as well as the generous donations of individuals and companies are what make this goal possible.

The 5th year anniversary of the Taste of the Palm Beaches will be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2008, and is limited to 1200 guests. Tickets are $35.00 in advance or $40.00 at the door, children between 6 and 12 are $20.00 and children under 6 are free. Many of the tickets are expected to be purchased in advance, so make sure not to miss out on what will surely be the premier event of the year. As of September 1st, tickets can be purchased in advance via www.pgacommons.com. All proceeds raised go to the Big Heart Brigade.

Sponsors to date include: West Palm Beach Dodge Chrysler, PGA Commons, Morehouse, Cars of Dreams, Jupiter magazine, Dining Out Magazine, the Roadshow Company and RBC Bank.

What is the Big Heart Brigade?

The Big Heart Brigade in a not-for-profit, 100% volunteer, 501 (C) 3 organization. In 1992, a few local businessmen, residents, firefighters, police officers, and other civil servants who wanted to make a difference in the their community came together and founded this very diverse and unusual group. Over the years, community leaders and other citizens who are dedicated to a "hands-on" approach to civic service joined them. Their motto is "Coming to the Rescue." The Big Heart Brigade is a 100% volunteer organization and has no paid administrators or board members. Every dollar that is raised goes directly back into the community, thereby maximizing the impact of every dollar.

Although their most visible project is the Thanksgiving Day Dinner, the Big Heart Brigade offers many other services to the community. In the past, the Big Heart Brigade has provided toys to needy children during the holidays and provided cooking and other services for non-profit events throughout the year.

LOCKS OF LOVE
a not-for-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged
children 18 and younger with medical hair loss. These custom-fitted hair
prosthetics are provided free of charge or on a sliding scale to children whose
families meet the Locks of Love Board of Directors guidelines.

The organization, which began operation in 1998, strives to help all financially disadvantaged children who are living with the daily trials of medical hair loss. Thousands of bundles of donated hair arrive as a result of the internet and word of mouth as well as publicity Locks of Love receives in newspapers, magazines and on television programs.

Donors provide the hair, volunteers open and sort the donations, and the manufacturer hand-assembles each piece, which requires approximately four to six months. Children comprise over 80 percent of the donors, making this a charity where children have the opportunity to help other children.
Locks of Love provides its recipients with a custom, vacuum-fitted hairpiece made entirely from donated human hair.

The vacuum fit is designed for children who have experienced a total loss of scalp hair and does not require the use of tape or glue. Most of the applicants suffer from an auto-immune condition called alopecia areata, for which there is no known cause or cure. Others have suffered severe burns, or endured radiation treatment to the brain stem, in addition to many other dermatological conditions that result in permanent hair loss.

Donated hair must meet the following guidelines:
The donated hair must be at least 10 inches (preferably 12") in length
It must be bundled in a pony tail or braid Hair must be free of bleach. Colored hair and permed is acceptable.
