:: Dining in the Dark hosted by the Florida Outreach Center for the Blind
Where: Holiday Inn Airport, 1301 Belvedere Road, West Palm Beach, FL 33409
Saturday, October 25, 2008
Time: 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM
The blind show guests how fun "Dining in the Dark" can be
Often people are encouraged to "go toward the light"; however, The Florida Outreach Center for the Blind will be bringing others over to "the dark side." Actually, they are just asking others to step into their shoes for an evening and dine with the lights out during their fundraising event.
The Thomas Hartig Dining in the Dark Dinner will be hosted by the Florida Outreach Center for the Blind on Saturday, October 25, 2008 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the:
Served in Complete darkness, the event will be a unique expedition into a world of smell, taste, sound & texture. The dinner is a benefit designed to increase awareness about blindness and to raise much needed funds for programs to assist individuals with vision loss. This is a chance for friends, family and community members to experience, for a few short hours, what those that are blind live with every day.
Guests will enjoy live music by Mark Doyl and a keynote address by
Representative Shelley Vana. After the address, hotel wait staff outfitted with night vision goggles will serve a decadent three-course dinner. Guests will discover what they are eating by using their sense of smell, taste, and touch. Provisions have been made for vegetarians and dietary restrictions.
The event is named after Dr. Thomas Hartig who brought NFB-NEWSLINE, newspapers via the telephone, to blind persons across the country and who was an inspiration to us all. He never let blindness prevent him from reaching out to others. Dr. Hartig passed away last year, but lives on through his work and the Thomas Hartig "Inspirational Community Member" Award. After dessert, the lights will be brought up, and the award will be presented to a blind individual whom has similarly overcome obstacles and is an inspiration to others.
Individual tickets are available for $50, or a private table for seven reserved for $500. Children 12 and under are not permitted due to safety considerations. Tickets can be purchased by sending a check to The:
Florida Outreach Center for the Blind
1280 N. Congress Ave, Suite 108
West Palm Beach, FL 33409.
